Wominjeka - Welcome Isabel Henderson Kindergarten is an inclusive, not-for-profit, nature-based community kindergarten for children aged 3-5 years. Our program is designed to support the holistic development of all children; valuing diversity, equity and sustainable practices. The centre extends and enriches children's whole development, through carefully planned and intentional play-based learning experiences.
Isabel Henderson Kindergarten celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2023. The kindergarten began in 1913 as the Fitzroy Mission Kindergarten at the corner of Young and Leicester Streets, in what was then a poor and overcrowded suburb. Today the kindergarten is a vibrant and well-resourced centre in North Fitzroy providing long day kindergarten for 3-to-5 year olds. There are many interesting stories to tell of the kindergarten’s evolution over the last 110 years and we have an exciting future to look forward to.
Acknowledgment of Traditional Owners Since long before our time, the First People to live on and care for this Land are the Wurundjeri people. They are the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the Land on which Isabel Henderson Kindergarten is built. Together, we are on a journey to learn and to respectfully share knowledge about caring for Country; protecting and replenishing this Land. By connecting children to the Wurundjeri people, teachings and stories, we hope that they too will care for the Land, and waterways - taking only what they need, and cherishing it for others to appreciate into the future. We also pay our respects to the Wurundjeri Elders past, present and future, acknowledging the vital role they play in connection to Country and culture.
